Agfa’s consumer and professional films were a rare delicacy while growing up in Canada. Their approach to colour and black and white was unlike anything from Kodak or Fuji, but they had far less distribution, and market share in North America. In Calgary, Vistek was the only reliable place to find it. The only other joint in town was a small and overpriced used-camera shop that I liken to being a tourist trap for travelers exploring downtown. Over in Toronto, Agfa Vista was actually repackaged and sold Loblaws grocery stories for a short time under the house brand “Master Choice”. As the history of colour photography tells it, Kodak’s colour films didn’t really take off until the end of WWII, when Agfa science und know-how became the spoils of the war… like other patents, including Bayer Aspirin and heroin.
